In 1808, German philosopher Friedrich Schelling compared architecture to "frozen music". This gallery of vintage architectural photographs considers Schelling’s lyrical metaphor in the light of time and change. All these images have one thing in common: they feature buildings that have vanished, or “melted” from our collective memory. Pictured are commercial, industrial, public and private buildings that have fallen in the wake of fire, natural disasters, urban renewal and modernization. Once, these structures defined Oshawa and its urban character. Today, these selected images are certificates of absence.
